She worked with Ruth Asawa and the Alvarado Art Workshop as a resident artist in San Francisco public schools for five years and then designed and implemented the visual arts curriculum at St. Ignatius in 1977 and has taught to the present - balancing the life of an educator with that of a working artist.  In addition to her daily teaching load, Katie was chosen to receive the Spohn Excellence in Teaching Grant, she received a Summer Curriculum Grant in 2000 to participate in a pilgrimage to Turkey to “Follow the Footsteps of St. Paul” and was then inspired to develop the Sacred Symbols course, she has taught several Summer Intensives that challenged students to create large-scale outdoor sculptures that were designed for the St. Ignatius College Prep. campus, she was chosen as artist-in-residence at the “Dump” in San Francisco(Recology) where she guided nine high school students in a month long creative pursuit of forming sculptures from recycled materials in the studio on site at the “Dump”, she was selected as San Francisco high school art teacher of the year, and in 2000 was one of five high school architecture teachers selected nationally to participate in a week’s residency at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. In addition, she has been selected as a conference presenter at the annual National Art Education Association conferences in New York, Miami, Minneapolis, Denver and Boston as well as a presenter at the California Arts Education Association.  Katie has served as a board member and supporter of Artship- a community based arts foundation and was a founding member of the S.F. Archdiocesan Environment, Art and Architecture Committee and was granted the 2010 St. Francis Patron’s award for her service and contributions to the artistic life of the community.

Katie has been developing and implementing curriculum to teach the creative process for over 40 years in San Francisco.  Subject areas include architecture, sculpture, painting and set design.  Her teaching has inspired thousands of students to recognize, express and share their gift of creativity and in so doing their resultant pieces give praise to the Creator.  Their work consistently receives national and regional honors.  Her personal creative work ranges from environmental fabric designs for the vast and modern St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco to intimate sacred spaces, Byzantine icons and an Art and Nature Retreat Site in northern California. An ancient and personal symbol system imbues her large scale paintings, welded steel sculptures, stained glass pieces, painted fabric wall scrolls and wearable art with an energy that presents itself as a bridge allowing the Sacred to be sensed in our daily living.
